This morning, I opened up LinkedIn, and my notifications were blowing up!
I checked to see what was going on and saw The FoundersPress featured in Korean media.
It turns out I had covered the Top 40+ Companies at the Elevate Tech Conference in Toronto, and one of the companies had a South Korean connection, so they received additional coverage! For those who missed it, check out the coverage here. I shared more details on LinkedIn about this.
The thing about PR is that it’s like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re going to get. You just have to post and keep posting! Sometimes there’s content we think will take off, and sometimes it doesn’t. No one really knows until you put it out there.
If you’re looking to get press, here are some ideas:
1. No one cares about the features
It’s all blah blah, but people love stories. That’s how you make them remember you!
2. Build relationships with journalists before you need coverage
Connect with them, support their work, and get to know them.
3. No one likes a pitch-ready approach
No one wakes up thinking, “Let’s see some pitches today.” But if you talk about stories, that’s something else entirely.
4. Join founder communities for support
Founder communities can open doors for you, whether it’s PR, early users, or feedback on your product. Having a community of founders in the same boat as you is incredibly valuable. Of course I will be biased and recommend our own FoundersBeta community.
5. Show up and keep showing up!
Building a startup can be isolating, but you can’t keep hiding behind the code. You have to get out there and sell it. I’m pretty convinced the number one job of a founder is to sell. If you can’t sell, find someone who has that skill and team up.
If you’re building a startup, I’d love to hear about it. You can find me on X or LinkedIn, as always.
