We have been busy rolling out new initiatives with FoundersBeta, starting with our first ever in person event in Toronto where we released the first startup documentary film on Canadian founders. Here is the thing, massive tech meetups in Toronto are not working. They have become more of a sales pitch ground. They are loud and mostly useless.
I previously wrote about this on The FoundersPress, explaining why massive tech meetups do not work. We have to rethink the startup ecosystem in Canada. We took the plunge with our first event and it was an absolute blast. We had three speakers lined up, and here are some crash notes from the event.
First Customer Sucks!
Mark Bania, who previously exited Contractor Compliance, emphasized this point. The first customer usually does not work out, but you learn a lot. You have to keep iterating, as Viler from SingleKey also talked about.
Be Where Your Users Are
This is what John Marzo from airfairness talked about. You cannot be on every platform. Pick one and double down on it.
Leverage the Hell Out of Everything
Ask your connections to refer your product. If you do not ask, the answer is always no. Ask, ask, and keep on asking.
Stay tuned for our next event. If you have expertise in scaling ventures love to hear from you!
